RADHA’S GREEN BUILDING PROJECT
In August 2009 Radha completed sustainable retrofits with support from a Vancity Green Building grant. Come by and experience the results! You can also watch a video overview of the work that was done or read about it in an article on local greening projects by Granville Magazine.
Green Heat
air-source heat pump replaced the gas-fired HVAC rooftop unit for 2nd floor heat/ac
- a heat pump backed up by high-efficiency gas furnace replaced an inefficient gas furnace for ground floor
- BENEFITS- substantially reduce our carbon output
Hold the Warmth
- foam insulation was sprayed in
- window with broken seal was replaced
- new roof using TPO membrane (a white membrane that reduces heat gain), and rigid insulation on back half of building
- BENEFITS – maintain temperature and help reduce our carbon footprint
Add Natural Light
- 14 solar light tubes were installed bringing natural light into the kitchen and dining room
- BENEFITS – reduce electricity usage and create a more pleasant, uplifting environment for guests and staff
Add More Light
- dimmable LEDs and compact fluorescents were installed with new wiring
- new track lights highlight the art exhibits
- BENEFITS – reduce electrical consumption, create a more well-lit interior space
Add Plants
- a partial green roof of drought-resistant sedum was installed
- BENEFITS – protect the roof membrane, decrease heating loads in the summer, reduce storm water run off, and support a diversified eco-system
Add Air
- the heat pump continually circulates fresh air and a new make-up air unit in the kitchen does the same
- BENEFITS – improved air quality
Save Water
- flush controls and aerators were installed
- BENEFITS - save 100,000 litres/year
Refinishing
- original fir floors were sanded and refinished with low VOC urethane.
- damaged floor coverings on the stairs, behind the bar and in the office were replaced with marmoleum
- low VOC paints were used to paint the ceilings, hallways, office, and doorways
- BENEFITS – maintaining and re-using in an aware way; taking care of what we have
Purchasing
- lowest toxicity/low VOC options for glues and finishes were chosen
- wood was locally sourced or salvaged where possible
- materials were selected for recycled content
- contractors were required to divert all recyclable waste material from landfill
